The beauty industry is unregulated in the UK which means that anyone is able to work as a beauty therapist, or open their own salon, with little or no qualifications, or the appropriate insurance. If something was to go wrong as a result of your treatment, it may be very difficult to seek recompense from the therapist or salon responsible.

Any therapist in a salon should be suitably qualified to carry out the treatment that you are undergoing. It is common in the majority of salons, for the relevant certificates to be placed in view of their clients, showing that their therapists are appropriately qualified to carry out treatments.
Prior to any treatment being carried out, the therapist should discuss the procedure with you and discuss any aftercare required. If it is your first time visiting a salon, you should be asked to complete a questionnaire identifying any allergies, and confirm if you are on any medication which could affect the treatment. Patch tests if required should also be carried out in advance of any treatment to rule out any allergic reaction you may have.
