Roundup, one of the world’s most well-known brands of weed killer has been found to have been a major contributing factor in relation to a man who developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. A jury in San Francisco have ruled unanimously in favour of Edwin Hardeman.

Bayer, who obtained Roundup as part of a takeover of their rival Monsanto and who produce the herbicide and other weed control products have strenuously repudiated the fact that Roundup contained carcinogens.

Bayer have said: “We are confident the evidence in phase two will show that Monsanto’s conduct has been appropriate and the company should not be liable for Mr Hardeman’s cancer.”

A jury have now awarded Mr Hardeman $80 million.

Following the hearing, the company said, “this verdict does not change the weight of over four decades of extensive science and the conclusions of regulators worldwide that support the safety of our glyphosate-based herbicides and that they are not carcinogenic.”

It has been reported that of the 11,200 Roundup cases awaiting trial, Mr Hardeman’s is only the second to be heard.

Dewayne Johnson , who we reported last year was awarded $289 million after a Jury declared that the use of Roundup had caused his cancer.
