The most recent Health & Safety Executive figures show a 375% rise in Hand-Arm White Finger Vibration (HAVS). More than 2M people are at risk of developing HAVS in the UK. More than £2.5 million was paid in fines in the last seven years by companies failing to protect employees from HAVS.

With new power comes new responsibility. Powerful tools and machinery have increased efficiency and productivity but come at the cost of increasing risks of developing an industrial injury. This article aims to inform on the risks, symptoms, and recourse to workers and families affected by HAVS.

What is HAVS?

HAVS, also known as "vibration white finger" or "dead finger," is a condition caused by prolonged exposure to hand-arm vibration, typically resulting from the use of vibrating tools and machinery. This condition affects workers in construction, manufacturing, and mining, where tools are commonly used.

What are the symptoms and effects?

HAVS manifests through a range of symptoms, including tingling, numbness, and pain in the fingers, hands, and arms. These symptoms may become more pronounced in cold and damp conditions, often leading to colour changes in the affected fingers. Over time, the condition can progress to the point where even simple tasks become challenging due to reduced dexterity and grip strength.

What duties of care does your employer owe you?

In Scotland employers have a legal obligation to protect their employees from workplace hazards, including those related to vibration exposure. Failure to provide adequate safety measures and training can result in employers being held liable for the health issues that arise due to HAVS. Workers who have been diagnosed with HAVS may be entitled to compensation for their suffering, medical expenses, and potential loss of earnings.

What should your employer do?

To prevent HAVS and protect the health of their workforce, employers can take proactive measures to help prevent HAVS:

  • Employers should identify tasks that involve vibration exposure and accurately assess the risks they pose.
  • Employers should implement controls to minimize
  • Employers should train all users to use vibrating tools and equipment correctly and provide instruction on the importance of taking breaks to reduce cumulative exposure.
  • Employers should regularly monitor employees' exposure to vibration to detect early signs of HAVS.
  • Employers should provide Personal Protective Equipment.
