If you’ve suffered harm from a cosmetic procedure in Scotland, Calio Claims can help. Our team advises clients on claims involving negligent cosmetic treatments, from poorly performed fillers and Botox to unregulated beauty procedures. We understand how distressing these experiences can be and are ready to support you with clear, practical advice and expert legal assistance.

In 2024, the UK saw what is believed to be the first death caused by a non-surgical cosmetic procedure going wrong.

Alice Webb, a 33-year-old mother of 5, underwent a Liquid (filler) Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure. A BBL in this manner is not classed as a surgical procedure: it involves filler being injected into the buttock to alter the shape or appearance of the area.

It is believed that shortly after the procedure, Alice began to feel unwell and was rushed to the hospital with potential BBL related complications. The complications proved fatal, and Alice passed away in the early hours of 24 September 2024.

Following Alice’s passing, her family has become involved in campaigns run by Save Face, a body which helps connect the public with qualified practitioners for non-surgical procedures. Save Face, along with Alice’s family, is campaigning for BBL procedures to be performed by Plastic Surgeons who are registered with the GMC only.

Why do people allow unqualified professionals to perform these procedures?

It will come as no surprise that the costs of procedures have increased over the years. Individuals have taken to contacting beauticians or other unregistered individuals due to the ‘cheap’ and ‘risk-free’ non-surgical procedures being advertised.

How many people are affected?

Save Face has supported approximately 600 people who have suffered complications from non-surgical cosmetic procedures (NSCPs). They have noted 52% contract sepsis, while over 39% required corrective surgery, which came with their risks.

Calls for regulatory reform

Following the Keoghs Review in 2013 Keoghs Review in 2013 the Scottish Cosmetic Interventions Expert Group (SCIEG) was set up to investigate cosmetic procedures in Scotland.

A public consultation held thereafter in 2020 found that 98% of individuals who responded supported regulating NSCPs. The SCIEG proceeded to gather insight into NSCPs with the assistance of Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS).

Research and potential regulation discussions remain ongoing with a Bill expected in 2026. To find out more, check out our article on Why is Scotland looking to regulate the beauty industry?

A non-surgical Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is a procedure using injectable fillers to enhance buttock shape and volume, without surgery or fat transfer.

Non-surgical BBLs carry risks including infection, tissue damage, sepsis, and in rare cases, fatal complications. Risks increase if done by unqualified practitioners.

High-risk cosmetic procedures should be performed by qualified, registered medical professionals. Laws vary for low- and medium-risk treatments.

Yes, you may claim if treatment complications were due to negligence. Speak to a solicitor to assess your case and legal options.
