Foetal Valproate Syndrome – what is it?

During the 1970’s a new drug, Sodium Valproate was introduced to treat epilepsy. The drug was prescribed to many pregnant women suffering from epilepsy.

Unfortunately, the drug has serious side effects and as a result hundreds of babies were born severely deformed. Although the side effects were known, the drug continued to be used.

Remedies

If you have given birth to a child affected by Foetal Valproate Syndrome and the child is under 19 years of age, then you can claim compensation on behalf of the child, or if the child is over 16, they make a claim themselves.

For many children and women though it may now be too late to claim compensation through the courts. Consequently, there is growing pressure on the Government to introduce a compensation scheme to compensate children and mothers affected by Foetal Valproate Syndrome.

We will provide updates on the progress of the introduction of a compensation scheme on our website.

We can discuss with you whether you are eligible to claim through the Courts or not.
