A stillbirth is a baby born after the 24th week of pregnancy and shows no signs of life. Stillbirths are common in the UK; there are more than 3,600 every year with one in every 200 births ending in stillbirth. According to the NHS, eleven babies are stillborn every day in the UK, making them 15 more times common than cot death.
Some of the conditions that can cause or are associated with stillbirth include:
- bleeding before or during labour
- placental abruption
- reduced oxygen to the baby
- genetic defects
Whilst many stillbirths are linked to placental complications, a large proportion of stillbirths seem to happen in otherwise healthy babies and the cause cannot often be explained.
However, there are times when a stillbirth could be due to negligence by the medical experts involved and the parents will want to question why this has happened and what could have been done to prevent this occurring.
